Sal’s Stars of the Week: Dr. Paul Ratana (introduced by Colette Seifer)
I am pleased to announce this week’s Sals Star as Dr Paul Ratana and as the first Sals Star recognized from outside of the Cardiac Sciences community.
Dr Ratana has been the Medical Director of the St Boniface Emergency Department since 2018 and the WRHA Emergency Medicine Specialty Lead since 2020. Prior to obtaining his medical degree and specialty training in Emergency Medicine, he practiced law and he maintains an interest in health law and risk management.
Dr Ratana consistently works in a collegial and collaborative manner with Cardiac Sciences. He is a valued member of the ACS Network and is always willing to engage with us in troubleshooting processes to get the right patients into the right beds.
Over the past several weeks, the SBH ED has been under immense pressure, handling unprecedented volumes of patients. Despite this, Dr Ratana has continuously advocated for the care of cardiac patients at SBH. This has recently led to a ‘modified red redirect’ policy being enabled at St Boniface Hospital which means when SBH emergency begins to reach capacity, noncardiac patients will be redirected to other sites, allowing cardiac patients to continue to receive care that is only available at SBH.
We look forward to the continuation of this successful partnership between Cardiac Sciences and Emergency and Dr. Ratana’s able leadership.
