Sal’s Star of the Week: Shere Gigolyk

(Introduced by Kwabena A. Osei-Bonsu)

This week, the Sals Star is Shere Gigolyk from the RT & Perfusion Department. Shere has been with St Boniface Hospital since June 1990; first as a therapist then taking on a leadership role in 2015. As she says, despite having worked in several capacities around the province – Neonatal Transport Team, The Pas, Flin Flon & Thompson, St B has always been home for Shere. She’s been able to build strong bonds at this site over the years and in 2015 she decided to give something back to the profession she had received so much from by taking on the Clinical Lead role in the NICU.

Through continued dedication and hard work Shere has continued to excel, not only in implementing programs such as Point of Care Lung Ultrasounds (more on this later) and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy at the bedside but in bringing more RTs into the fold and to the cutting edge of care delivery at the bedside. “I don’t want to ever stop developing respiratory therapy”-Shere said as I noticed the passion in her eyes as she spoke of where she wanted to continue driving the profession with a goal of seeing a role of a respiratory care practitioner developed someday.

Shere’s list of accomplishments are impressive and extensive. Notably, Shere presented the progress of the St Boniface Hospital Point of Care Lung Ultrasound program at a Neonatology Conference in Paris, France! The paper has also been published in the Journal of Perinatology. She continues to be an ambassador for the profession and for St Boniface Hospital on a local, national and  international basis.

Notwithstanding her accomplishments, her caring and kind-heart is the part of Shere that shines the most! Her impact on RT students through preceptorship over the years has definitely helped recruit many RTs to St Boniface Hospital (Including me!).

During her downtime, Shere loves to spend time at the lake, with her dogs and cook. (Enchiladas are her favourite to cook as we found out during our cultural food week!).

Thank you Shere. We are grateful to have you on our team. I look forward to many more years working with you! Congratulations.
