Announcements

The Section of Cardiac Surgery would like to acknowledge the retirement Keith Warrian after a career spanning 7 decades of dedicated service.

Keith graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1969 and began his residency here as well.  He initially worked as a vascular surgeon in Kelowna before returning to Winnipeg where he remained until retirement.  He served as the Associate Medical Director of Cardiac Surgery and made numerous contributions to the Program in clinical and educational endeavors.  He was the Chair of the Cardiac Sciences Standards Committee and the Director of the Cardiac Surgical Clerkship Program.  His mentorship, not only to residents and students but also to junior staff members, was invaluable.  He made a tremendous impact not only on his patients, but everyone who had the privilege to work with him.

Congratulations to Keith on a very well-deserved retirement!

Sal’s Star of the Week: Cheryl Leblanc and Claudia Klemmens

(Introduced by Scott MacKenzie)

The Sals Stars of the Week are Cheryl Leblanc and Claudia Klemmens who are the CRNs for the Cardiac Operating Rooms. Their roles are essentially twofold: 1) being clinical experts and a resource to staff  2) maintaining and improving nursing practice by providing clinical guidance/support to health care team members. Teaching comprises a large part of their daily activities. Claudia and Cheryl  developed a Fast Track Cardiac Nurses Training Program with funding provided by the Cardiac Surgery Program. This program allows them to provide mentorship to nurses for an 8 week intensive course.  This gives those nurses who are inexperienced to Cardiac Sciences a solid foundation to further develop their skills and become expert Cardiac OR nurses. In addition to their clinical duties, Claudia and Cheryl are responsible for monitoring supplies, equipment, implants and are responsible for liaison with the equipment and supply personnel, all to keep the 3 Cardiac Operating Rooms running efficiently. They also maintain SIMS doctor preference cards and other written resources to allow for preparation for all Cardiac procedures. Cheryl and Claudia are wonderful to work with and possess a wealth of knowledge. They are in large part responsible for the smooth running of the Cardiac Operating Rooms. Congratulations and thank you for all you do!
