Sal’s Star of the Week: Critical Care Nursing Educators – Shelley Dolbeck, Laura Ross, Elson Alvarez

(Introduced by Sarah Gilchrist)

This week we are recognizing the Educators in the Critical Care Nursing Orientation Program –  Shelley Dolbeck, Laura Ross and Elson Alvarez.  This group plays a pivotal role in the recruitment and onboarding of our ICU nurses joining all three Critical Care Units at St. Boniface.

Shelley, Laura and Elson are often the first contacts for nurses joining Critical Care and they use their skill, expertise, compassion and humour to provide a smooth transition.  Over the last 3 years there has been a lot of changes to the CCNOP;  particularly the change from the delivery of theory to a blended model requiring the navigation of an online nursing platform and changes in how the clinical portion is performed, bringing on board Y2 nurses who require ICU training and let’s not forget even a name change!  This team has been able to pivot from the previous ways of doing things, working collaboratively as a team and working with their unit educator partners to ensure a successful path forward into the clinical area for our nurses.

Most recently this group has collaborated with the unit based educators to offer weekly Lunch and Learn sessions for our teams.  They have been very well attended, interactive and a great way to provide a spark back to our recovering teams.  It can not go unnoticed that taking on new initiatives in this time of COVID recovery is a feat, but I think this shows their level of passion for education and safe and competent care delivery to the patients we serve.

Shout Outs!

Shuangbo Liu and the MB ACS Network have launched a new educational campaign called “Dial Don’t Drive” (DDD) to help the public be aware of heart attack symptoms.  This important initiative was featured on the CTV News Medical Watch.  Check it out.

Emily Hyde and Robin Ducas, with Annette Schultz, Anna Chudyk, Andrea Winther Klippenstein, Dawn Barker, Holly Bekkering, Chloe Frechette, Joanne St.Godard-Frechette, Karan Buttar, and Ravinder Buttar were awarded an Exploration Grant by the Reseau Compassion Network for developing innovative approaches “Engaging Patients and Caregivers in Identifying Needs to Support Transitions from Pediatric to Adult Congenital Heart Disease Care”. They will be using this funding to consult congenital heart disease patients and their caregivers to ensure they have a voice in the development of transitions from pediatric to adult care. Congratulations!
