Cardiac Catheterization (Heart Cath) Lab (Y2)

The Heart Cath Lab is the only HCL in Manitoba, and serves Manitoba, Northwest Ontario, and Nunavut. There are three labs, with one lab being open 7 days a week. Over 7000 procedures are performed yearly in the HCLs.

Procedures performed in the HCLs include:

  • Angiogram
  • Right and Left Heart Catheterization
  • Balloon Angioplasty/Stent Implantation (PCI)
    • Intra-arterial atherectomy (rotational, orbital, and intravascular lithotripsy)
    • Thrombectomy
    • Coronary intravascular imaging (IVUS/OCT)
  • Myocardial Biopsy
  • Mechanical Assist device Insertion (IABP, lmpella, ECMO)
  • Transaortic Valve Implantation (TAVIs)
  • Structural Heart Procedures (PFO closure; VSD closure; LAA closure; Mitral Clip insertion; Mitral valve in valve implantation; and Carillion Mitral Contour System)
  • Transvenous Lines
  • Pericardial Taps

All acute STEMIs are treated in the HCLs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Patients from the HCLs are recovered in the Y2: Pre-& Post Recovery area.
