Electrophysiology (EP) Lab

The EP Lab, located in the Bergen Cardiac Center at St. Boniface Hospital, is the only adult cardiac EP lab in Manitoba. The EP lab performs EP studies that investigate the performance of the heart’s electrical system and may be followed by a catheter ablation.

This procedure is completed when an issue arises affecting the heart’s electrical system and causes an abnormal fast heart rhythm (arrhythmia). The procedures completed in the EP lab include:

  • Electro physiology Study for diagnosing abnormal heart rhythms with:
    • 3-dimensional mapping of cardiac structures and arrhythmia Genesis
  • Radiofrequency Ablations for:
    • Supraventricular Tachycardia
    • Atrial-Ventricular Nodal Tachycardia
    • Atrial-Ventricular Tachycardia such as Wolff-Parkinson-White
    • Atrial Flutter
    • Atrial Tachycardia
    • Atrial Fibrillation (may be radiofrequency or Cryo-ablation)
  • Ventricular Tachycardia
  • Atria-ventricular (AV) node Ablations for paroxysmal, persistent, or permanent symptomatic atrial fibrillation.

Over 500 cases are performed per year. Patients undergoing EP procedures are prepared and recovered in the Y2: Pre-& Post Recovery Area.
