Title:
Cardiologist

Clinical Areas:
Catheterization Lab (Y2)

About Me

I was recruited as an Academic Clinician Scientist in fall of 2011 to the Section of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba.  As an Associate Professor of Medicine, I am currently cross-appointed within the Departments of Physiology and Pathophysiology.  As a clinician scientist and as an interventional cardiologist I see the devastating impact of coronary artery disease. We are proud to say that our cardiac Catheterization laboratory at St. Boniface hospital ranks among the top centers across the country. We perform over 5500 cardiac catheterizations every year with 2600 coronary interventions. Not only we do more procedures than most labs across the country we have one of the best records in patient outcomes. Based on the most recent national data Manitoba is one of the best provinces to have a heart attack!

Clinical Interests

High Risk PCI with mechanical circulatory support, Rotational atherectomy, Left main angioplasty

Interests

My current focus is to identify the contribution of bioactive lipids to cardiac muscle injury during acute myocardial infarction.  I have established the cardiovascular lipidomics as a principal investigator at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the Albrechtsen Research Centre.  My laboratory uses LC/MS/MS Lipidomic platform for quantitation and identification of lipid oxidation products in both animal models and clinical conditions to determine the involvement of oxidized lipids in both cardiac and vascular lesions. The ultimate goal is to not only identify the contribution of bioactive lipids to cardiac muscle injury but also to determine new therapeutic approaches to prevent the pathological effects of oxidized lipids.
