For many of us in leadership roles this weekend has felt like a constant series of teleconferences as we head into the next couple of months of living in a pandemic situation. There is no question that the guidelines and policies for the hospitals/WRHA/MB for dealing with this pandemic are evolving quickly and will continue to do so as the number of cases rise, as the number of inpatient hospitalizations increase (currently still no COVID-19 related inpatients in MB) and ultimately as we see increasing numbers of COVID-19 related ICU patients. However, one of the greatest difficulties we have is getting the current information on how we should be looking after our patients and providing services. This in part reflects the confusion engendered by the number of competing voices providing that information, i.e., from other national and local/provincial/state agencies in the US, Canada and globally. It also reflects the fact that for many of us there is information overload- i.e., your inboxes are probably full of COVID-19 memos, many of them duplicates. In these settings, it is critical that we have a standardized approach for the provision of our services and one source of information that we all follow.
For the duration of this pandemic in MB, Shared Health has been deemed as that “ultimate source of truth” and is endeavoring to provide up to date guidance as we go through this together. Examples from today include the new guidance for international travelers INCLUDING physicians, and provincial guidelines on the management of elective surgery. So, beyond those issues that Docs MB will be taking the lead on (like tariffs for virtual clinic visits), I would suggest that you visit the SH website at the beginning and end of each day to keep up to date as we continue down this road.
