Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Clinic

The Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Clinic is located at St. Boniface Hospital. Patients who have been referred for a TAVI, or are being worked up for a TAVI, will be seen in many of the other clinics at the St. Boniface Hospital. A TAVI is a procedure for those individuals who have severe Aortic Stenosis.

The TAVI coordinator in the Cardiac Sciences Access Office is vital in assisting patients navigate the journey from the initial referral to the procedure. Along this journey, the patient will be seen in many of our Cardiac Clinics.

A group of physicians and surgeons make up the TAVI team. These physicians and surgeons will assess patients with Aortic Stenosis and recommend treatment. Sometimes the treatment is to watch and wait, sometimes the treatment is to proceed with the TAVI; sometimes the treatment means that additional testing needs to be done before a decision can be made. Sometimes the best treatment is to do nothing at all. Regardless of which option is best for the patient, there is a team of physicians and nurses that walk along this journey with the patient.

If the decision is to proceed with a TAVI, and all the necessary tests are completed, the patient will be scheduled for an appointment in the Cardiac Surgery Pre-Operative Clinic, where they are assessed by a Cardiac Anesthetist prior to their procedure. During this appointment, a Nurse Practitioner will do a complete history and physical, review all medications, and have bloodwork and EKG done. Registered Nurses will assist in this appointment and ensure that specific patient education has been reviewed.

After the procedure, the patient will be followed in the Cardiac Surgery Discharge Clinic. There is a follow up Echocardiogram that is required one month after the TAVI to assess the overall function of the new valve. This Echo will be reviewed by the Nurse Practitioners, and a phone appointment will occur with the patient to gather further information about how well the patient is functioning.

All the TAVI appointments will be a combination of in-person and by telephone.
