ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sal’s Stars of the Week: Melyssa Correia

(Introduced by Christina Kuttnig)

I am pleased to introduce this week’s Sals Star of the week Melyssa Correia. Melyssa has been a valued member of ACCU since completing her CCNOP course in 2020.  She has a wealth of knowledge, experience and skills from her previous clinical roles working family medicine at Seven Oaks and the CAU/IMCU/6AS at St. Boniface.  She became a CRN in ACCU in July of 2022.

Melyssa is known within the unit as an approachable, kind, deeply caring and devoted nurse.  Her colleagues notice she comes in early and leaves late.  She is always helping on the floor, is available and patient with all questions. We all love her sense of humor and easy manner.

Just recently Melyssa was on a shift where a massive transfusion protocol had been called and was in progress.  The unit had incredibly high acuity with our baseline of 3 doubles, so lean on resources and even though her relief arrived to take over, she stayed from her 12 hour day till 2230 to help out on the unit. She would not leave until the unit settled and she felt they were safe.

Most recently Melyssa, in the supervisor’s words “went above and beyond to assist with cardiology staffing challenges on nights Feb 14”.  There was a transfer from ACCU to 6AS and Melyssa found they were going to be 3 short for the night 8.  She worked with the 6A CRN to troubleshoot how to cover the unit.  Melyssa volunteered herself to take on the role of charge on 6A and take a full patient assignment.  She also touched base with ACCU throughout the night to ensure they were supported.  As the overnight supervisor stated “Melyssa showed outstanding leadership and support for a struggling unit and I wanted to recognize that and show my appreciation.”

These are a few recent examples why I’m honored to congratulate Melyssa on being this week’s Sals Start of the Week.
