Sals Star of the Week:  Dawn Barker! Introduced by Donna Lee Samson

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Dawn Barker, RN in the Cardiac Clinics as my Sals Star of the Week. Dawn has been a RN at St. Boniface Hospital since 1994 and has been part of the Cardiac Clinics since 2008. Dawn has worked in all areas of our clinics but has a deep passion for the Heart Failure patient population. As we have needed to change our model of care, especially during the pandemic, Dawn has always put patients first, doing whatever she can to advocate for them, listen to their concerns and provide the reassurance they need during this very uncertain time. Dawn makes every effort to return every patient phone call by the end of the day, often staying way past the end of her shift to do so. She will always make room for that extra patient in clinic or those that need an urgent visit to ensure we can keep them out of hospital and home with their family.

Dawn Barker,

Her citation as a Sals Star comes from her most recent outstanding effort. Over these past few weeks, we have experienced some last-minute staffing challenges and Dawn stepped up to the plate to accomplish the work of 3 nurses in one and keep the Heart Failure clinic running smoothly. Her determination, stamina and passion for patient care is what makes Dawn a truly remarkable nurse, team member and all-around great person. Thank you Dawn for all you do for the Cardiac Clinics and our cardiac patients.

Transitions

Karen Throndson retired from her position as Clinical Nurse Specialist from the WRHA Cardiac Sciences Program (CSP) as of Friday. We will miss her for her contributions to the development of the Cardiac Sciences community and as a colleague and friend.

Karen transitioned to St. Boniface Hospital in 2017 from HSC, where she also worked as a CNS for Cardiac Sciences. Karen has been involved in the development of several programs, including the virtual Manitoba Thoracic Aortic Clinic (MTAC), the Aortic Stenosis re-design project and the Bridge to Home Collaborative. She also has been an invaluable member of our team as co-chair for the Standards Committee.

The Heart Team initiative has been an important step in promoting the synergistic interactions between Surgery and Cardiology- the driving principle in the creation of Cardiac Science.  Karen had an integral role in the development of this initiative and specifically in the development and implementation of the Terms of References and Standard Works that are the main vehicles for mediating change through the Heart Team Committee.

Karen has previously held nursing roles in the cardiac Cath lab, critical care, high-risk anesthesia, and as a clinical education facilitator and research and teaching assistant with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba.

Karen Throndson

Karen is the lead co-author of several publications, has provided numerous scholarly presentations, is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, and has participated in quality assurance projects throughout her career. Her knowledge of the CSP combined with her experience and education have been of crucial benefit to both patients and staff throughout the region.

We will miss her and wish her well in her future endeavors.

Sals Star of the Week: Senait Petros!
Introduced by Lisa Bowen.

Senait Petros

The common theme of the Sals Star of the Week is that there are so many deserving staff members and it is hard to choose just one.  I feel the exact same way as everyone else.  The staff on CSIU have gone above and beyond in caring for not only our cardiac surgery patients but adapting to and caring for the Post recovery patients, taking patients from Cardiology when it is at capacity as well as working in other units that are requiring assistance.

This leads me into announcing our Sals Star of the week.  When the ask came for Volunteers from our unit to go out of their comfort zone and become nurse extenders in the Critical Care Area, this nurse was one of the first to step up!  She has worked on our unit for many, many years and felt unsure that she would be able to care for the ICU patient.  Do you think I should do it?  Will I be able to do it?  were  a few of the questions she asked me at the time.  Well, she did it and she is loving it!  At first the goal was to only work in the cardiac surgery stream but she has willingly gone to whatever area she is needed in and has just flourished! This has included more than just the critical care areas! She has shared her knowledge with ICU RNs that are not familiar with a post op cardiac surgery patient  as well as taken the opportunity to  learn more about and care for the ACCU and ICMS patients. I have heard such positive feedback from managers and coworkers about her amazing attitude during this crazy time we are all living through.  While talking with her recently, she has said she is really happy that she took on this challenge and is  able to help out our patients and coworkers.  Please help me with a big round of applause for this week’s Sals Star, Senait Petros!

Congratulations to Lisa Bowen who now has welcomed her second grandbaby Norah Elizabeth Anderson into the world on February 19th!

Cardiology Technologist Day on Valentine’s Day celebrates healthy hearts

Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists

The Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT) designates Valentine’s Day as a day to highlight the important role of cardiology technologists in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Cardiology technologists perform a variety of non-invasive cardiac diagnostic tests, such as electrocardiograms, exercise stress testing, and Holter monitoring/analysis which are used to assess heart function. Working with cardiologists and internal medicine specialists, these skilled providers deliver important patient care services. Shared Health recognizes cardiology technologists working across our health system. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your commitment to providing compassionate care to Manitobans.

Sals Star of the Week: Tracey Benediktson!
Introduced by Alana Head

It was very difficult to pick just one person to be the Sal’s Star of the Week as all the staff on 6A have shown bravery and resilience working through the pandemic. Most of them did not choose to work with COVID-19 patients but have taken on the challenge with grace. The staff have continued to remain positive (mentally) in an environment that others try to avoid. Without them and their expertise in both cardiology and medicine, these units would not be possible. For that, they all deserve a big thank you.

This week’s Sal’s Star of the Week is Tracey Benediktson. Tracey has worked at St. Boniface Hospital since 1993 and has been a CRN since 2015.  In her role as a CRN she has led the team through many changes and is now an expert at opening new units. She is kind, caring, compassionate and has been flexible and adaptable to all changes.

Last week, a patient in the orange zone was de-flagged and was to be transferred to a green ward later that day. After reviewing the patient, Tracey noticed some changes in the patients x-ray and asked IP&C to consider one last rapid swab before the patient left the unit.  IP&C agreed and sure enough, the swab came back positive.  Tracey then had the patient promptly transferred to 6AW. The IP&C team were very thankful for her diligence and intuition as this could have led to an outbreak.

Thank you, Tracey, for your hard work and commitment to 6AS. Your leadership and knowledge have been invaluable in this evolving unit.

Sals Star of the Week: Janet Kang!
Introduced by Dan Quinn

Janet Kang

Though I of course wish I could recognize and give the gift of Salisbury House food to everyone I work with, for this week’s Sals Star I would like to recognize a very deserving recipient in Janet Kang. Janet is a nurse on 5A, and I have been fortunate enough to work with Janet ever since I started on the unit. Janet is a kind and compassionate person, exuding quiet competence and a calm and supportive manner appreciated by patients and her colleagues alike. Janet is a strong leader and an excellent mentor to less experienced staff, and she is currently working as a preceptor for a senior practicum student from UofM

This past week Janet and her student identified potential COVID-like symptoms in one of their patients. Acting quickly, this patient was immediately swabbed, isolated, and eventually transferred to the appropriate unit when the swab came back positive. This combination of early detection of these symptoms through thorough assessment skills, critical thinking, and taking rapid action likely prevented an outbreak on our unit. Instead of a potential disaster the outcome was a safe transfer and zero transmission of COVID to any other patient or staff member. Care and respect for patients is always at the forefront of Janet’s nursing practice, with the patient in question feeling supported and like his questions were answered, despite the stressful situation.

Though this is just one isolated example of the approach Janet takes every day with every patient encounter, Janet also managed this situation while working collaboratively with her student, turning this event into a teachable moment to help foster these skills in the next generation of nurses in our program. Thank you to Janet for saving the day last week, and for your ongoing commitment to sharing your knowledge, training those who will one day work alongside you, and for your dedication to great care for patients in our program!

Recirculation of the Cardiac Sciences SBH Foundation Request Form.

The SBH Foundation has been a constant supporter of the Cardiac Sciences Program. The most recent Foundation campaign on our behalf has resulted in the upcoming acquisition of an endoscopic vascular harvester (EVH) system that will replace the open dissection of leg veins in the course of CABG.  Cardiac Sciences maintains an evergreen priority list of Foundation asks based on submissions from across the Cardiac Sciences community. In advance of our next meeting with the Foundation to share our wish list I have appended the intake form for those requests for Foundation support that you may have been thinking about. Requests for capital equipment, technology and (sometimes) personnel have all been supported. There is no deadline for submissions. However, I do meet with the Foundation on a quasi-regular basis and would love to be able to pitch the case for your suggested acquisition to support cardiac care.

Sals Star of the Week: Samantha Deguzman.
Introduced by Sara Unrau

Samantha DeGuzman

It was rather difficult to pick just one Cardiac Critical Care staff member to recognize as the Star of the Week. Everyone has stepped up in the setting of pandemic, picking up extra shifts, supporting new staff, embracing and supporting both ICU trained and non-ICU trained reassigned staff. There are so many that have taken extra steps during this time.

For the Star of the Week, I really wanted to recognize and acknowledge someone that was pushed well beyond their usual experience and has embraced this disruption with a smile. I would like to recognize Samantha “Sam” DeGuzman as the Sals Star of the Week. Sam is a unit clerk in PARR and was reassigned when the ICU overflow moved into PARR. She was asked if she would be willing to make this new area her “home” for now. She graciously accepted this challenge and increased her hours to full time to support the unit. In one of her very first shifts in the unit she supported the team through a Code Blue and ECMO insertion. Her calm, can-do attitude kept her focused and able to contact the appropriate people and resources, even as she expressed how intimidating and scary the situation was. She is quick to learn, asks questions and has been instrumental in assisting with the flow of patients in and out of ICU. She always has a smile on her face, welcomes any new faces into the unit. Family members have commented that she is always friendly when she answers the phone. This makes such a difference to anyone who is unable to visit! Please join me in congratulating Samantha DeGuzman.

Carly Lodewyks

Congratulations to Carly Lodewyks who has won the Best Presentation Surgeons Award and the People’s Choice Presentation Award from the Department of Surgery Research Day for her presentation entitled: A province wide analysis of ten year outcomes in patients with thoracic aortic disease: long term survival is worse in women regardless of age.

Sals Star of the Week : Dan Quinn PTM 5A Cardiology and Pacemaker clinic

Dann Quinn

Dan is being recognized for his transformational work on Green belt projects in order to improve processes and engage staff at St. Boniface Hospital.  Most recently his work has been instrumental in identifying barriers in taking senior practicum students on units, including unit culture, absence of standards, and expectations.

He is creating a standard of excellence for the student experience from first contact through to hiring at the site.  Managers have been trying to recruit nurses and other staff at St. Boniface for years – Dan and his team’s work on creating standards and improving the student experience will increase our ability to hire staff at the site, and address our chronic problem of staffing resources, and managing vacancies. Congratulations Dan!

Kick off The Sals Stars of the Week Program.  At our Friday Huddles the Management Team of Cardiac Sciences takes time to share that week’s outstanding innovations and services contributed by the members of the Cardiac Sciences community.  As part of our new beginnings in 2021 theme we have formalized that process.  Based on a weekly schedule, each Program Team Manager and Director will sequentially have the opportunity to recognize one member of their team for a very recent contribution/innovation.  The awardee and the innovation will be highlighted (and will receive a donated gift certificate from Sals– hence the name).  This week, to kick off the program, Kiran Singh, our departing Administrative Director made the selection, from among the members of her team.   We are pleased to recognize as our first Sals Star of the Week, Brett Hiebert.

As most of you know, Brett heads the analytical/outcomes program of Cardiac Sciences. Brett is known for his ability to extract, analyze and present data in a format that makes sense to diverse audience.  He has been instrumental in the development of the Cardiac Sciences Performance Dashboard and led the assessment of the Revascularization “Right Fit” Index.  However, this week he is recognized for his very recent development of the Weekly Cardiac Services Volume Report.  This  was developed to compare levels of our current activity during the ongoing COVID surge vs. levels a year ago.  This Report has been a critical tool for communicating to Shared Health leadership the extent of the unmet need for services of our cardiac patients, aggravated by the pandemic.  Thank you Brett!
