Sal’s Star of the Week: Critical Care Nursing Educators – Shelley Dolbeck, Laura Ross, Elson Alvarez

(Introduced by Sarah Gilchrist)

This week we are recognizing the Educators in the Critical Care Nursing Orientation Program –  Shelley Dolbeck, Laura Ross and Elson Alvarez.  This group plays a pivotal role in the recruitment and onboarding of our ICU nurses joining all three Critical Care Units at St. Boniface.

Shelley, Laura and Elson are often the first contacts for nurses joining Critical Care and they use their skill, expertise, compassion and humour to provide a smooth transition.  Over the last 3 years there has been a lot of changes to the CCNOP;  particularly the change from the delivery of theory to a blended model requiring the navigation of an online nursing platform and changes in how the clinical portion is performed, bringing on board Y2 nurses who require ICU training and let’s not forget even a name change!  This team has been able to pivot from the previous ways of doing things, working collaboratively as a team and working with their unit educator partners to ensure a successful path forward into the clinical area for our nurses.

Most recently this group has collaborated with the unit based educators to offer weekly Lunch and Learn sessions for our teams.  They have been very well attended, interactive and a great way to provide a spark back to our recovering teams.  It can not go unnoticed that taking on new initiatives in this time of COVID recovery is a feat, but I think this shows their level of passion for education and safe and competent care delivery to the patients we serve.

Shout Outs!

Shuangbo Liu and the MB ACS Network have launched a new educational campaign called “Dial Don’t Drive” (DDD) to help the public be aware of heart attack symptoms.  This important initiative was featured on the CTV News Medical Watch.  Check it out.

Emily Hyde and Robin Ducas, with Annette Schultz, Anna Chudyk, Andrea Winther Klippenstein, Dawn Barker, Holly Bekkering, Chloe Frechette, Joanne St.Godard-Frechette, Karan Buttar, and Ravinder Buttar were awarded an Exploration Grant by the Reseau Compassion Network for developing innovative approaches “Engaging Patients and Caregivers in Identifying Needs to Support Transitions from Pediatric to Adult Congenital Heart Disease Care”. They will be using this funding to consult congenital heart disease patients and their caregivers to ensure they have a voice in the development of transitions from pediatric to adult care. Congratulations!

The Section of Cardiac Surgery would like to acknowledge the retirement Keith Warrian after a career spanning 7 decades of dedicated service.

Keith graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1969 and began his residency here as well.  He initially worked as a vascular surgeon in Kelowna before returning to Winnipeg where he remained until retirement.  He served as the Associate Medical Director of Cardiac Surgery and made numerous contributions to the Program in clinical and educational endeavors.  He was the Chair of the Cardiac Sciences Standards Committee and the Director of the Cardiac Surgical Clerkship Program.  His mentorship, not only to residents and students but also to junior staff members, was invaluable.  He made a tremendous impact not only on his patients, but everyone who had the privilege to work with him.

Congratulations to Keith on a very well-deserved retirement!

Sal’s Star of the Week: Cheryl Leblanc and Claudia Klemmens

(Introduced by Scott MacKenzie)

The Sals Stars of the Week are Cheryl Leblanc and Claudia Klemmens who are the CRNs for the Cardiac Operating Rooms. Their roles are essentially twofold: 1) being clinical experts and a resource to staff  2) maintaining and improving nursing practice by providing clinical guidance/support to health care team members. Teaching comprises a large part of their daily activities. Claudia and Cheryl  developed a Fast Track Cardiac Nurses Training Program with funding provided by the Cardiac Surgery Program. This program allows them to provide mentorship to nurses for an 8 week intensive course.  This gives those nurses who are inexperienced to Cardiac Sciences a solid foundation to further develop their skills and become expert Cardiac OR nurses. In addition to their clinical duties, Claudia and Cheryl are responsible for monitoring supplies, equipment, implants and are responsible for liaison with the equipment and supply personnel, all to keep the 3 Cardiac Operating Rooms running efficiently. They also maintain SIMS doctor preference cards and other written resources to allow for preparation for all Cardiac procedures. Cheryl and Claudia are wonderful to work with and possess a wealth of knowledge. They are in large part responsible for the smooth running of the Cardiac Operating Rooms. Congratulations and thank you for all you do!

Sal’s Star of the Week: Shere Gigolyk

(Introduced by Kwabena A. Osei-Bonsu)

This week, the Sals Star is Shere Gigolyk from the RT & Perfusion Department. Shere has been with St Boniface Hospital since June 1990; first as a therapist then taking on a leadership role in 2015. As she says, despite having worked in several capacities around the province – Neonatal Transport Team, The Pas, Flin Flon & Thompson, St B has always been home for Shere. She’s been able to build strong bonds at this site over the years and in 2015 she decided to give something back to the profession she had received so much from by taking on the Clinical Lead role in the NICU.

Through continued dedication and hard work Shere has continued to excel, not only in implementing programs such as Point of Care Lung Ultrasounds (more on this later) and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy at the bedside but in bringing more RTs into the fold and to the cutting edge of care delivery at the bedside. “I don’t want to ever stop developing respiratory therapy”-Shere said as I noticed the passion in her eyes as she spoke of where she wanted to continue driving the profession with a goal of seeing a role of a respiratory care practitioner developed someday.

Shere’s list of accomplishments are impressive and extensive. Notably, Shere presented the progress of the St Boniface Hospital Point of Care Lung Ultrasound program at a Neonatology Conference in Paris, France! The paper has also been published in the Journal of Perinatology. She continues to be an ambassador for the profession and for St Boniface Hospital on a local, national and  international basis.

Notwithstanding her accomplishments, her caring and kind-heart is the part of Shere that shines the most! Her impact on RT students through preceptorship over the years has definitely helped recruit many RTs to St Boniface Hospital (Including me!).

During her downtime, Shere loves to spend time at the lake, with her dogs and cook. (Enchiladas are her favourite to cook as we found out during our cultural food week!).

Thank you Shere. We are grateful to have you on our team. I look forward to many more years working with you! Congratulations.

Sal’s Star of the Week:  Kathy van der Vis and Rita Mann

(Introduced by Tim Dyck)

This week’s Sal’s star goes to both Kathy van der Vis, our Administrative Assistant for Cardiac Sciences, as well as Rita Mann, Administrative Secretary for Cardiac Sciences.

Kathy has been with  the Cardiac Sciences Program since 1989, a career spanning 33 years.

Kathy’s level of commitment and focus is unprecedented. Not only has Kathy been doing the job of close to 2.0 EFTS for a number of years, she does this with expertise and proficiency. Some examples of Kathy’s level of commitment include the fact that she arrives an hour early on her own time just to ensure she gets all her work completed. If there are meetings or evening commitments that need to be attended to, Kathy will ensure she is available regardless of whether she is on vacation or not. It is not uncommon for Kathy to bring work that requires concentration to her lake, just so she can focus and ensure accuracy of the finished product. I recall recently being struck by Kathy’s level of commitment when during a recent accreditation that Kathy told me she would have to cancel a vacation day, and apologized for missing our Friday morning huddle. I then noticed her literally jogging through the Y3 area to attend to another issue, as I presume she did not want to waste time walking to address that issue.

Outside the hospital Kathy enjoys walking with her dog Sadie, and is an avid gardener. She also enjoys her “happy place” at the lake in the summers. Most of all she loves spending time with her family, son Scott and his wife Kim, and her daughter Amanda and granddaughter Seren.

Kathy will be retiring this summer, and will take a well-deserved rest at the end of June. Good luck and thank you for your dedication and years of service to the Cardiac Sciences Program.

Rita Mann has been an Administrative Secretary with the Cardiac Sciences Program since 2003. Rita previously worked at St. Boniface from 1973 to 1980, moved out of province, and then returned in 2002.

Rita is a strong contributor and a team player with the Y3 cardiology admin team. She has seen a number of changes in the section over the years having worked with a number of cardiologists. Rita literally is the right hand of some of the cardiologists she works with, and has been instrumental in providing excellent patient care. Rita is a true team player who is always willing to go the extra mile to help someone in need, whether that be mentoring a new staff, or just answering questions and explaining processes.  Rita is also noted as having contributed to the organization and administration of the Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic with Dr. Seifer, Dr. Khoo and Genetics. Rita has been the catch-all with taking on a bunch of extra responsibilities for the department as a whole such as filling out work orders, ordering billing cards, booking rooms, ordering scrubs, ordering office supplies, helping with payroll, and the list goes on and on.

Outside the hospital Rita enjoys spending time with her 2 sons (Sean & Patrick) and 3 grandsons – James 12, Matthew 10 & Kyle almost 6.  Rita enjoys bike riding and going for walks at Kildonan park with her partner & best friend Henry.

Rita will also be retiring in July, and has earned a well-deserved break.

Again, thank you both for your dedication and years of service to the Cardiac Sciences Program.

Shout Out!

Congratulations to Chris Kuttnig on her appointment as president-elect of  the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses (CCCN).

Sal’s Star of the Week:  Chantal Fillion

(Introduced by Lisa Bowen)

This week’s Sal’s Star is CSIU’s own Chantal Fillion.  Chantal has been working as an RN on our unit since 2005, after completing her senior practicum with us!  Throughout the years, she has taken the AA course, RP training, and has been a preceptor/mentor to countless students and new staff.  How do you describe her? Caring, calm, critical thinker, approachable, pleasant, always smiling, sweet, conscientious, experienced, team player, kind, responsible, reliable and patient are just some of the words her coworkers have used to tell me about Chantal and I couldn’t agree more! I have had the opportunity to know Chantal from the very start of her career and she has always been exactly how her coworkers describe her. She continues to bring a positive attitude with her every day.  Is there one thing that stands out?  Not really.   It is difficult to pick one example when Chantal’s normal is having an “eagle eye” when it comes to recognizing changes in patient conditions or rhythm, her “spidey sense” of knowing when new staff may need extra support and answering my SOS “bat signal” call when extra or AA experienced staff are needed, all with the goal of ensuring safe patient care! With all of that being said, please join me in a round of applause for this week’s Sal Star, Chantal Fillion.

Sal’s Star of the Week:  Cardiology Medical Team

(Introduced by Colette Seifer)

It has been another challenging week for physician coverage throughout the cardiology services. So, to break the rules again, this weeks Sals Star is ‘The Team’.

  • You covered outside calls, STEMI calls, HSC consults and managed to fit in a teaching session and clinic all at the same time.
  • You rearranged your schedule to cover the inpatient service at short notice, working 3 weeks in a row.
  • You rearranged your schedule to cover the previously rearranged schedule to provide lab coverage.
  • You covered 4 lab days in a row having just finished a week of inpatient cardiology coverage.
  • You offered to work this week-end, knowing it was one of only a few free days this month.
  • You offered to cover Friday (a Friday before the long week-end!).
  • You offered to take care of a couple of extra patients.
  • You have been covering the inpatient service 2 out of the last 3 weeks and offered to continue to cover an extra day (a holiday Monday).
  • You made multiple schedule changes, sometimes hourly, making sure everyone was kept up to date. You rearranged clinic appointments, teaching sessions, meetings and other commitments.

All of this, to keep patients safe. Each one of you are The Team. Without The Team, our system would not function.

Thank-you to The Team.

Congratulations to Thang Nguyen, Sarah Gilchrist, Katarina Lee and Emily Hyde who graduated from the Executive Training (EXTRA) Program offered through Healthcare Excellence Canada.

Sal’s Star of the Week:  Imei Woo

(Introduced by Dalibor Gavranovic)

Imei Woo

5A Cardiology is an extremely busy unit with high patient turnaround, frequent off-unit diagnostic tests and procedures and at times a shortage of staff of all classifications making it difficult to manage. COVID isolations have made it even more difficult for families to come in and visit their loved ones.

The unit clerks are an integral part of day-to-day operations. They have a central role in communicating and supporting staff, patients and families. The unit clerks are often the first person answering the phone and relaying the difficult messages to the screeners and family visitors that they are not able to come in and see their loved ones. Imei has been very supportive in answering these difficult calls. The families are often frustrated and are trying to reason and explain why they need to come in.

Imei provides families with relevant and current processes and if needed she would respectfully ask for support whether it is from the CRN or manager. Her calmness and clear messaging puts families at ease and at times deescalates conflict.

Imei is very organized and prompt in updating patient information in the EPR, Oculys and white board. She is on top of the clerical workload and even when she is alone on the shift, she is able to positively communicate and manage the workload. She is well aware of potential admissions, transfers and discharges and helps the team with flow by anticipating these movements & prepares charts and updates the unit white board with changes.  During the months of December and January I had the pleasure of managing the desk for a few hours. Let me tell you I don’t know how we would cope if we did not have employees like Imei.

Imei is always absorbing new information, asking appropriate questions, and providing solutions. Imei is ready to take challenges in a positive manner and assist her coworkers.

Please join me in congratulating Imei on being the Sal’s Star of the Week.

National Nurses Week May 9-15

This week we recognize our nurses, coinciding with the birthday of Florence Nightingale on May 12. It has been a difficult journey for all of us over the past year, but much of the heavy lifting has been done by the nurses of  Cardiac Sciences, who have integral roles in the provision of all of our services.  Please join me in thanking, celebrating honouring our nurses for what they do 24/7 to support patients with Cardiac Disease in Manitoba.

Sal’s Star of the Week:  Belinda Landry

(Introduced by Sara Unrau)

I’d like to recognize Belinda Landry as Sal’s Star of the Week. As the unit educator Belinda is an integral member of the ICCS team. She works hard to keep us all up to date and committed to providing excellent care. Belinda is always readily available to do on the spot teaching, supporting staff and taking on a patient load when needed. A recent example of her dedication to the team and the unit, just this week…we had pulmonary catheters with alteplase infusions, sub pleural epidural catheters, new staff caring for patients with cardiac support devices, all of which were new experiences to a variety of staff members. Belinda was in each of these rooms providing on the spot education and support. We couldn’t have done it all without her support and expertise! Thank you and congrats to Belinda!!

Sal’s Star of the Week:  ACS Network

The ACS Network has had a history spanning 3 decades and was one of the early “wins” of the newly established Cardiac Sciences Program. In 2008 the Code STEMI program was initiated that has been an important step in reducing in hospital mortality. In 2014 the ACS Network was formally constituted and has been important in the development of a range of provincial standards-  17 at last count!.  The work of a number of members of the Cardiac Science Program have been integral in the development of the ACSN, especially that of the leadership of John Ducas, Lorraine Avery and now Shuangbo Liu.

This past several weeks has been a very notable time for the ACSN, for several reasons. Firstly, Friday they held another very successful  Heart Attack Day, a major CHE event for health care providers across MB.    However, this week we are recognizing the ACSN team as a very deserving Sal’s Star of the Week- for the work they have done in implementing the Dial Don’t Drive Campaign, directing STEMI patients to an ambulance and NOT to a lift from the family.  This is an important public health effort and continues a long history of achievement for this truly dedicated team.  Congratulations to the ACSN for your recent successes and for your almost 15 years of dedicated efforts improving cardiac care in Manitoba.
